An asteroid has been named after renowned scientist Zhu Guangya, in recognition of the contributions to science and technology made by the distinguished Tsinghua graduate.
Professor Zhu received the special honor during the Symposium on Academician Zhu Guangya's Thoughts held at the Great Hall of the People on Dec. 26.
Tsinghua Vice President Gong Ke addressed the symposium, saying that Professor Zhu is an outstanding scientist and one of Tsinghua’s most respected alumni.
Professor Zhu (Physics, Class of ’45) and other scientists who graduated in that era have set an example for the younger generation to follow, Professor Gong said. He also encouraged students to learn from the achievements of Professor Zhu so as to make their own mark on China’s advancement.
Born in 1924, Zhu Guangya graduated in 1945 from XinanUnitedUniversity (consisting of TsinghuaUniversity, BeijingUniversity and NankaiUniversity), and obtained his Ph.D. from MichiganUniversity.
He is a member of both the ChineseAcademy of Science and the ChineseAcademy of Engineering, and has been one of the leading scientists in China’s development of atomic projects.
