Memorial Day BBQ : Worlds Happily Collided
On Memorial Day, we did something we haven’t really done before. We had a big BBQ in our backyard and invited a ton of people from various facets of our lives. Aside from Lilah’s birthday party, I don’t think we’ve ever had a gathering of this size at our place. I feel as though I’ve been putting off doing something like this for far too long so we just went for it. Our yard is finally at the point where I am ok with entertaining back there. We had a bunch of Mike’s friends, lots of my friends, we had our single friends AND some of my “mommy” friends along with their kids. This mix of folks was the very definition of worlds colliding…and it felt really good.
A bunch of my old partying buddies came out; people I rarely see nowadays. Many of our formerly single friends are starting to picture themselves having kids in the not so distant future, so I think they’re increasingly receptive to hanging out among Lilah & buddies. I think everyone had a pretty good time. People began to come by around 2, and the last didn’t leave till past 10. We had sausages and hot dogs and burgers, plus I made a seemingly insane amount of chicken skewers and stuffed peppers. Everyone kept bringing more and more beer and I was mixing cocktails all day.
Lilah loves the attention she gets when she is around people so she was having a field day…sometimes her love of being the center of attention can take a bad turn though. She hinted at pushing baby Tatum (1yr) a few times, but we sort of stopped it from happening. Then when the grown-ups were focusing on cute little Ella instead of her, she crept up towards Ella and pushed her down. It was horrible – she shouldn’t push anyone but on top of that, Ella is only 9 months old! I know she did this mainly to see what daddy and I would do. She knew it was wrong. What I did was give her a time-out. Her time-outs consist of being put in her crib and left there for a few minutes by herself to think about what she did. Luckily, as the night went on she changed her tune and was super sweet to both the little girls. She was reading books and singing songs to Tatum, and letting Ella share her toys. She is such a little sweetie so much of the time but I just hate those occasional bouts of bulliness. When she gets like that I feel like I don’t know what to do to really curb the behavior for good. This is an issue that deserves its own post one of these days.
Then Indie showed up with her parents so the two girls were off and running. I was so glad her whole family came, and got along with our friends so well. Even Marley had a great time with 3 dog buddies to romp around with. After seeing how well this went, I definitely want to do it more often. I love the fact that I can actually see my friends and have a few drinks without worrying how we’re gonna get home. And, of course, its great having the ability to put Lilah to bed when need be. People stayed long after she was fast asleep.
Meanwhile, such a mix of fun people and the only pic I really took was this one of the little ladies:
